Nonparametric regression using needlet kernels for spherical data

چکیده
Abstract. Needlets have been recognized as state-of-the-art tools to tackle spherical data, due to their excellent localization properties in both spacial and frequency domains. This paper considers developing kernel methods associated with the needlet kernel for nonparametric regression problems whose predictor variables are defined on a sphere. Due to the localization property in the frequency domain, we prove that the regularization parameter of the kernel ridge regression associated with the needlet kernel can decrease arbitrarily fast. A natural consequence is that the regularization term for the kernel ridge regression is not necessary in the sense of rate optimality. Based on the excellent localization property in the spacial domain further, we also prove that all the l (01 ≤ q < ∞) kernel regularization estimates associated with the needlet kernel, including the kernel lasso estimate and the kernel bridge estimate, possess almost the same generalization capability for a large range of regularization parameters in the sense of rate optimality. This finding tentatively reveals that, if the needlet kernel is utilized, then the choice of q might not have a strong impact in terms of the generalization capability in some modeling contexts. From this perspective, q can be arbitrarily specified, or specified merely by other no generalization criteria like smoothness, computational complexity, sparsity, etc..

Filtered polynomial approximation on the sphere
Localised polynomial approximations on the sphere have a variety of applications in areas such as signal processing, geomathematics and cosmology. Filtering is a simple and effective way of constructing a localised polynomial approximation. In this thesis we investigate the localisation properties of filtered polynomial approximations on the sphere. Using filtered polynomial kernels and a speci...
متن کاملA Comparison of Thin Plate and Spherical Splines with Multiple Regression
Thin plate and spherical splines are nonparametric methods suitable for spatial data analysis. Thin plate splines acquire efficient practical and high precision solutions in spatial interpolations. Two components in the model fitting is considered: spatial deviations of data and the model roughness. On the other hand, in parametric regression, the relationship between explanatory and response v...
متن کاملFlexible Learning on the Sphere Via Adaptive Needlet Shrinkage and Selection
This paper introduces an approach for flexible, robust Bayesian modeling of structure in spherical data sets. Our method is based upon a recent construction called the needlet, which is a particular form of spherical wavelet with many favorable statistical and computational properties. We perform shrinkage and selection of needlet coefficients, focusing on two main alternatives: empirical-Bayes...
متن کاملNeedlet approximation for isotropic random fields on the sphere
In this paper we establish a multiscale approximation for random fields on the sphere using spherical needlets — a class of spherical wavelets. We prove that the semidiscrete needlet decomposition converges in mean and pointwise senses for weakly isotropic random fields on Sd, d ≥ 2. For numerical implementation, we construct a fully discrete needlet approximation of a smooth 2-weakly isotropic...
متن کاملFast memory efficient evaluation of spherical polynomials at scattered points
A method for fast evaluation of spherical polynomials (band-limited functions) at many scattered points on the unit 2-d sphere is presented. The method relies on the sub-exponential localization of the father needlet kernels and their compatibility with spherical harmonics. It is fast, local, memory efficient, numerically stable and with guaranteed (prescribed) accuracy. The speed is independen...
